2005 - Black History Market for ALL
Our
Open Day on October 2nd 2005 was combined with a special event for
Black History Month. We hosted a Black History Market with over
20 stalls displaying images and items relating to the history of
the black communities of Ardwick, Longsight and Levenshulme.
The stalls overflowed
from the sports halls into the corridors and over 500 visitors enjoyed
the afternoon. Special packs were distributed to commemorate the
60th Anniversary of the Manchester Pan African Congress which was
held in Chorlton-on-Medlock in October 1945.

Heritage
Open Days 2005
Victoria
Baths was open for all four of the Heritage Open Days is 2005, from
Thursday 8th to Sunday 11th September. There was an art exhibition
by our resident art group, Pool Arts and on Sunday 11th we held
a tea dance in the sports hall - bringing back memories of the 1950's
when Victoria Baths was a regular dance venue as the main pool was
floored over in the winter months and used as a dance hall.

March
Open Day 2003
Over
800 visitors filled Victoria Baths on the afternoon of Sunday
2nd March. Many were drawn by the chance to see the stained
glass windows on the ground floor of the building which had
been boarded over since 1993. Although in poor repair, these
windows are still intact and looked stunning in the afternoon
sun. Six of the windows depict sportsmen (runners, boxers,
wrestlers, cricketers, footballers and golfers). In the Turkish
Baths suite the Angel of Purity is surrounded by flowers,
birds and romantic rural scenes. Guided tours were very popular,
giving visitors information about the history of the building
and the campaign to save it. The sports hall (originally the
Males 2nd Class pool) housed refreshments, a sales table and
also a memories stall. We welcome information from visitors
about their memories of Victoria Baths - this provides a big
contribution to our history project.

Summer
Fair 2001
In
June 2001 the Friends of Victoria Baths and the Victoria Baths Trust
organised a Summer Fair, inviting local community groups and other
agencies to hold stalls or run activities in the building. This
was our biggest ever public event and eee, it were grand! Grand
to have so many bodies in the Baths!! Even if one small child said
as he left the building, crowded with people, stalls, activities..."there's
NOTHING there" - meaning water in the pools of course. We're
working on that, Sunny Jim.
There was music and dancing and football (on cards). There was local
history, delicious food, dressing up; for the kids and a vast array
of all kinds of groups from our neighbourhood, all keen to be able
to use this glorious space which is Victoria Baths.
Over 1000 people came, and stayed to enjoy the company and the stalls
of all kinds. For an afternoon the local community re-claimed the
Baths.
