Turkish Baths Suite

As you enter the hot rooms you pass a tiled drinking fountain. Although the tilework is original there is a very modern looking tap. The first hot room, the Tepidarium is the first of the three levels of rising heat. Next is the Calidarium, the second level of rising heat. The third room which is called the Laconicum contains a 'chimney' from which the hot air came. The (internal) windows in the Laconicum are of primitive double glazing with the same glass on both sides of the wall.

As well as the hot rooms and Rest Room, the Turkish Baths Suite includes a Russian Bath, shampooing room and douche. The Russian Bath is a wet steam room. The shampooing room is where manicuring, scrubbing and general grooming used to take place. The douche, shown on the left, is an all round shower - one way of cooling off after using the hot rooms.

The Turkish Baths were very popular right up to the time of closure, and we expect visitors from a wide area to come and use this great facility again when the Victoria Baths are restored.
