Call Out for Zine Submissions

For 2020 Heritage Open Days, we're doing something a little different. We're over the moon to announce we are making our own ZINE and we want YOU to take part.

The nationwide theme for 2020 Heritage Open Days is Hidden Nature and we think this works really well following our many months in Covid lockdown because so many of us have been paying a lot more attention to nature this year than we normally might do. So, we would really like to hear about what Hidden Nature YOU have noticed or been inspired by.

Join in - send us your stuff!

We're accepting contributions from everyone, you can submit anything you like as long as it can be printed and is family-friendly. Here's a list of ideas:

  • Poems

  • Diary entries

  • Journalism

  • Drawings

  • Photos

  • Collages

  • Scans or prints of dried flowers and leaves

  • Recipes

  • Cartoons

  • Craft instructions and patterns

You can submit a full page (as long as it is A5) or send us items to incorporate. Please keep written pieces to under 200 words. For now, the zine will be published digitally so it can be easily shared, but we hope to have hard copies in the future.

Don't know where to start?

If you want to get involved, and you’re not sure where to start, here are some possible ideas to respond to. This isn’t a final list - you’re welcome to submit a Hidden Nature idea that isn’t listed here:

  • Have you noticed nature/the seasons more during the lockdown?

  • How has nature helped you this year?

  • Nature inside the home (pets/plants/pictures/photos)

  • Nature in the town and city (what have you seen or experienced where you live?)

  • Kids engaging with nature

  • Unexpected places flora/fauna have flourished

  • Nature and heritage buildings - have you seen nature represented on the outside or inside of historic buildings, e.g. in mouldings, windows or other decor?

  • Nature and health/wellbeing

  • Contact with nature while swimming or being around water (ponds, rivers, puddles, rain)

Name our zine!

The zine currently doesn't have a name, feel free to send suggestions and we'll pick our favourite.

Deadline for submissions

Please send all submissions to enquiries@victoriabaths.org.uk by the 20th September. If you would prefer to send us something in the post, please get in touch for details.

Small Print

All work must be the contributor's own and, by submitting items, you agree to give us publishing rights. Contributors also agree that we can use the final product for fundraising purposes - to raise funds for Victoria Baths Trust, the charity that runs the Baths.

More free activities for Heritage Open Days

We're also putting on a nature-themed scavenger hunt of the local area, starting at Victoria Baths. See HERE for all the details of how to take part.
