Join us for this, the second in our series of Hidden Histories online talks:

Through the Borehole

This talk will take you through the journey that water took through Victoria Baths, from borehole to the Pools, Turkish Baths, Laundry and Slipper Baths.

By the time Victoria Baths was being planned, a town water supply through Manchester had been established, but it was expensive. As work progressed on the Baths, building costs mounted steadily against the original estimates and the Council began to consider the possible use of well water. A sub-committee, having visited Baths in Leicester, Nottingham and London, had learned that well water was both cleaner and cheaper than town water supplies. Test borings in High Street, where the Baths was to be built, revealed a plentiful supply of water, and so the decision was made.

Find out more about the well itself, the boilers, the calorifiers and the progress of water through the building in a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at how it all worked.
